Art Nouveau Color Palettes

Mucha's botanical pastels, Klimt's gold leaf — the curve-forward aesthetic of 1900.

Art Nouveau color is the palette of Alphonse Mucha's poster women, Hector Guimard's Métro entrances, and the stained glass of Émile Gallé: muted botanical pastels — cream, sage, mauve, dusty rose — punctuated by gold leaf and deep forest green. Wada's 1933 catalog, drawn from the same European-Japonisme exchange, is full of these combinations: 'kariyasu' (刈安 — grass yellow) softened to gold, 'sakura' (桜) and 'fuji' (藤) for the pastel rose and mauve, 'matsuba' (松葉 — pine) for the deep botanical green. Reference material for editorial publishing, perfume and skincare brands, theatre and ballet design, hotel and salon identities, and any project that should feel like Paris in 1900.
