Forest Color Palettes

Deep moss, pine needle, aged bark — the palette of the understory at dusk.

A forest palette isn't just green — it's green layered over bark, shadow, and late light. Japanese color tradition catalogued the forest floor in extraordinary detail: 'moegi' (萌黄) is the spring green of new bamboo shoots, 'matsuba' (松葉) is the blue-black green of pine needles, 'tokiwa' (常磐) is the 'evergreen' that gives the name its meaning, 'kogecha' (焦茶 — burnt brown) is the color of wet bark, 'sumi' (墨) is the ink-black of the understory at dusk. Combined, these are some of the most restful palettes in the catalog — saturated without being aggressive, dark without being heavy. Reference material for outdoor brands, botanical illustration, environmental nonprofits, cabin hospitality and lodge design, hiking and travel editorial, and any project that should feel like walking into a Japanese cedar forest in early evening.
