Gothic Color Palettes

Stained-glass jewel tones over ink and stone — the gothic palette in pigment.

Gothic color is the palette of cathedral stained glass laid against the dark stone of the nave: deep crimson, lapis blue, gold leaf, and the sumi-ink black of carved oak. The Japanese tradition reaches the same register through different sources — 'kurenai' (紅 — safflower crimson) doing the work of medieval rose windows, 'gunjo' (群青 — ultramarine) for the lapis, 'ukon' (鬱金 — turmeric) for the gold, 'sumi' (墨) for the deep ink-black ground. These combinations are reference material for editorial design with weight, dark-academia branding, gothic-novel cover identity, occult-leaning lifestyle products, theatrical posters, and any project where the brief asks for 'reverent, dramatic, dark.'
