Kitchen Color Palettes

Warm cream, sage, terracotta, deep green — the colors that make a kitchen feel lived-in.

A kitchen is the room that sees the most light, the most wear, and the most hours. The palette has to work at breakfast and at dinner, in summer glare and in winter dusk, next to wood, stone, ceramic, and stainless steel. The Japanese color tradition is unusually well-suited: 'seiji' (青磁 — celadon) is the green of a hand-thrown tea bowl, warm against oak. 'Matcha' (抹茶) is the sage of herbs on a windowsill. 'Kaki' (柿 — persimmon) is the warm earthenware that reads as terracotta. 'Kariyasu' (刈安 — grass yellow) is the undyed cream that softens every other color in the room. These palettes are reference material for kitchen renovations, cabinetry brands, ceramic tile design, cookbook publishing, and any project that should feel like a kitchen at the end of a long, good day.
